Unbinding

My name is Eric Shofe, and my piece is titled "Unbinding." "Unbinding" explores memory, pain, community, and the unseen world. At its heart, it's about the act of release: breaking the chains of trauma, confronting our shadow selves, and finding comfort in vulnerability and connection. The piece depicts a sisterhood of women gathered around a bonfire nestled in the mountains. They stand in a circle, holding hands, united in a communal ritual of release. Together, they confront the pain and suffering they have endured through abuse throughout their lives. Their pain manifests in the smoke rising from the flames. Tormented faces emerge from the swirling charcoal, blending into the surrounding landscape before fading into the darkness. The artwork is rendered primarily in charcoal, with subtle hints of airbrush around its edges. Strong contrasts of light and dark create a dramatic, almost otherworldly atmosphere. The women gather near the bottom of the composition, illuminated by the fire, while the smoke and its haunting imagery rise above them. The movement of the charcoal strokes ties these elements together, creating a sense of energy and transformation. For me, charcoal is a very primal medium. I work with my hands, I get dirty, and I feel deeply connected to the art as I'm creating it. There's something raw and instinctive about the process that allows me to express emotions I might not otherwise be able to put into words. Creating "Unbinding" was in itself a cathartic experience; it became my own act of release. Ultimately, this piece is about the burdens we carry, the courage it takes to confront them, and the healing that can come from finding comfort and community and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable.
