Shadowings

My name is Dan Meinhart, and my piece is titled "Shadowings." It is a combination of multiple abstract portraits. One is an ink wash and acrylic painting on canvas, while the other is a monotype print, which is a totally different process from painting. The doubling effect that happens when these two portraits are put in relation to each other was really interesting to me, as was the way the work is fragmented into smaller, separate pieces that act as standalone works in their own right but are also fragments of the larger piece I framed. When I'm looking at it, my eyes move back and forth between the print and the painting. I notice the difference in textures, between the warm blacks of the ink wash and the cooler, glossier print, as well as the varying depths between the pieces. There's an oscillation that happens, a kind of destabilizing effect, from having these pieces presented in a single frame the way they are. Those are a few of the things I find interesting about it.
