Ghost Swing

My name is Amanda Morgado, and my piece is titled "Ghost Swing." My work has to do with the exploration of liminal spaces, which I define as places where memory and reality overlap. The first time I really started thinking of space in this way was after the death of my grandmother, when I was in her house for the first time after she passed. I had all of these memories of her there that were no longer part of my reality. I think memories could also be defined as ghosts. They are what is left after someone or something is gone, and a memory in a space could also be called a haunting. With this in mind, my piece "Ghost Swing" depicts a playful ghost revisiting a swing it probably used in life. The ghost is a classic bedsheet ghost sitting on a swing hanging from a tree branch at night. It is made from cast aluminum, so it is all one silver color, with carvings that create the image of my ghost. I carved the image into a block and then poured molten aluminum into the carving. Once it hardened, I was able to remove my casting. The piece itself is small: only 6 by 4 inches, and oval shaped.
