FEBRUARY

Monochrome: PURPLE

Monochrome describes paintings, drawings, sculptures, designs, or photographs in one color or values of one color. The February birthstone is amethyst, a violet-to-purple variety of quartz. Purple is the color of royalty, but it can also be a descriptor, a mood perhaps, but absolutely a prompt for your imagination.

SEPTEMBER

Neither Here Nor There

In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, Side Street Studio Arts seeks entries for Neither Here Nor There.

The first-generation experience has always been complex. Some feel a sense of pride and acceptance having been adopted into a new homeland, while others feel disconnected, without home and feeling they belong to both here and there, or neither. The first-generation experience can be full of contradictions.

This is a call for art from any artist to join in this conversation and is open to interpretation: Is it a contradiction? Do you feel connected to here? Or there? Both? Neither? Is it something else? What defines this experience for you? What is your experience or understanding of the first generation experience?
